Whiplash is when the head gets whipped around on the neck. This is most often associated with a car wreck, but in fact, could be a result of a fall, a collision while playing a sport or just monkeying round. Because the head weighs so much in comparison to the neck; it almost could be described as a ball on a stick. When the whiplash occurs it is almost a bow and arrow effect, except the head never leaves the neck, but it sure gets stretched.
When the head is whipped forward for example, the muscles, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels and disc are stretched beyond their active limits. This additional stretch is what causes tears in the soft tissue, i.e., the muscles, ligaments, disc, etc. The disc and ligaments have a very poor blood supply, thus it can take a long, long time to heal.
Moreover, when there is healing it most often occurs as scar tissue. This scarred tissue is less elastic, more sensitive, and is weaker. This is why some people that had a car wreck 20 years ago still have symptoms.
Chiropractic care is the best way to heal the effects of whiplash because adjustments realign the spine, which will help to prevent disc degeneration and spinal arthritis. In addition, it will prevent excessive scarring which will help curb chronic pain.
Some common symptoms from whiplash are headaches, neck pain, arm pain, tingling and numbness and back pain.
Low Back Pain Workshop every Tuesday and Saturday.
Every Saturday morning at 8am, and Tuesday evening at 6:30pm, Dr. Graham conducts a one-hour seminar on posture and low back pain that is open to the general public. This is a public service so there is no charge.
During the first half of the seminar, Dr. Graham discusses how ultimately poor posture leads to a breakdown of the nervous system; the low back joints and discs; resulting in low back pain, sciatica and other degenerative conditions.
He also will discuss how bad posture is causing stress-related illnesses, including headaches, insomnia and ulcers.
In the second half of the seminar, Dr. Graham will discuss such things as the best pillows to use; stretches and exercises; and will review a case study.
The last 10 minutes will be used for questions and answers.
Take advantage of Dr. Graham’s 20-plus years of experience, and come out for this free low back pain workshop.
